Apple iTunes was initially developed in 2001 (then known as SoundJam MP) to assist iPod owners in managing and playing back Apple-authorized digital media content on an iPod. Since then, it has expanded into a full-featured software application offering numerous ways for accessing, playing and enjoying music videos, movies, TV shows, apps podcasts books. iTunes plays an essential role in connecting iPhones and other devices to online content provided by Apple as well as playing purchased songs on modern Mac and Windows computers.
Some non-Apple hardware devices can be synced to iTunes, and enterprising hackers have even created programs enabling people to synchronize non-Apple phones with iTunes software. Unfortunately, Apple has come under criticism for supporting only their own mobile devices within iTunes in an attempt to increase iPhone popularity.
