It seems there are more and more people becoming self employed these days – or at the very least, many folks are starting a side business, turning a hobby into some extra income or doing some type of independent contractor work.
It often brings on a loss of self esteem, especially with men, who too often equate work with identity. Extended periods of unemployment can bring on shame, hopelessness and depression.

Four states remain a bulwark against a recession that has led to despair in other parts of the United States. These states with steady, traditional economies have kept their jobless rates down and remain the ideal places to find employment . The lowest unemployment rate in the country remains North Dakota, tied with Nebraska for an amazingly low 4.4 percent unemployment rate. This is followed by Wyoming and South Dakota, both with unemployment rates at 5.0 percent.
In order to be better prepared for a potential layoff you need to determine if your job is in real danger, otherwise you will suffer undue stress related to "will they or won't they get rid of me" type of questions.
