I believe marketing helps us gain knowledge of products, services, and opportunities. I also believe marketers try to open our heads and rewire us to buy their stuff. We need to understand that they want our money and that it is Us vs. Them.
There is no doubt about it – the Internet is delivering an increasing number of sales, leads, branding and customer relations benefits to businesses around the globe. And in one’s own backyard. Increasingly people are complaining about receiving the “dead tree” Yellow Pages at their door, because they search for products and services online.
In yesterday’s links roundup, I shared the story of Joe Ades, the gentleman grafter. Ades sells vegetable peelers on the streets of New York City by day, but goes home at night to a three-bedroom Park Avenue apartment. According to a 2006 Vanity Fair profile:
Then it’s out again for an early dinner in a style unheard of in London Labour. Six nights a week, accompanied by [his wife], he hits some of the biggest-name restaurants in town…He never has trouble getting a table.
Our whole world is filled with marketing designed to make us long for something else that we don’t yet have. In order to win our money, they have to convince us that they’ve created something that we want more than anything else - to desire something so strongly that we set aside all other desires.
